While Art Betke (Letter on February 16: "Climate Change Still Open for Debate") may be able to marshall the work of a few contrarian scientists in his seemingly relentless campaign to downplay the human causes of climate change, the fact remains that an overwhelming majority of scientists who study climate change agree that this process is being profoundly affected by human actions.
Nowhere is the impact of climate change more apparent than in the Arctic, where its visible effects are noted by both scientists and by indigenous peoples who have an intimate and long standing knowledge of the land and the water.
