The Aquatic Centre has been in existence for almost 20 years and it is time for a thorough cleaning of areas high up that have never been cleaned since this structure was built.
Each year in the fall when the building is shut down for a month, one would think that the cleaning of these areas would get some attention. Not the case as the same dirt is still there that has been accumulating since the building was constructed. It is obvious that the management of this facility are totally oblivious or don't care that no action was taken during these shutdowns to do something to rectify the situation.
The areas that are most obvious are at the end of the pool where the diving towers are situated. All other areas higher up that cannot be viewed obviously will have the same or worse dirty surfaces. In a humid area such as a swimming pool the problem can become a health hazard if not looked after.
This facility is a jewel in the crown of city buildings used by the public, but is a bit tarnished due to the apathetic attitude regarding cleanliness.
Other city facilites, such as CN Centre and Kin arenas, have dedicated janitorial/custodians and it shows in that these buildings are cleaner and well maintained. The Aquatic Centre have no such personnel. Daily cleaning is a bit sporadic and also leaves a lot to be desired as this has been designated to life guards whose primary job is life guarding and keeping the public safe. They are not janitors/cleaning custodians.
Time for someone of authority in City Hall to change the culture of how the Aquatic Centre is maintained.
For this year when it comes time to shutting down the facility for annual maintenance, it is imperative the scissor lifts and pressure washers are brought in to do what has to be done to get rid of all the dirt that has been accumulating over the years. Also time for a fresh coat of paint to rejuvenate the look of the building.
