A variety of special activities at cole Heather Park elementary focused on sports, social responsibility and literacy.

On Monday, three floor hockey teams from our school participated at the third annual floor hockey play day held at the Roll-A-Dome, organized by Southridge elementary students under the leadership of Tim Clough.

On Friday, Heather Park will host a full-day basketball tournament for boys and girls in Grades 6 and 7. This tournament will include a concession, bump contest with great prizes, and a PAC hosted dance (with lights and DJ) in the evening. The dance is free for all players. Andrew Burton, drug prevention co-ordinator for Northern Health and founder of Street Spirits, gave several class presentations on substance abuse prevention. Heather Park hallways will be a sea of pink today as staff and students participate in Pink Shirt Day - a proclaimed "anti-bullying day" throughout B.C.

Recently, Heather Park students were inspired by two author readings. Local author, Glen Sargeant shared his work, including his newest novel, Slalakum, with several classes. Award-winning author, Judy Cox entertained students with her lively presentation on her writing. Students were very appreciative of the chance to meet with published writers and ask questions about the writing process.

Zion Lutheran Christian school hosted its annual Appreciation Tea Friday morning. The tables were decorated with chocolate covered strawberries that looked like roses, and little baskets of candies sat at each place setting. Visitors were greeted at the door, baked goods and sandwiches, made by the staff and students, were served along with coffee and tea. The students then entertained everyone with song and dance and readings from the Bible. The message was clear, "we appreciate you!"

All Around Our Schools

A student dance was led by leadership students of Highglen Montessori elementary on Monday with all proceeds from admission and the concession going to Disaster Aid Canada in the hopes of contributing money to a water tower. The primary dance was held at lunchtime and the intermediate students in the evening. Almost $300 was raised. Intermediate drama continues to be held during lunch on Tuesdays as they are preparing Hansel and Gretel for a spring performance.

It has been 100 days in school and our primary classes will be celebrating. Mrs. Dionne's class will be having presentations of their 100-day projects and celebrating with pyjamas and a potluck lunch.

The topic for the month of February during the Wednesday afternoon assembly is Water - how students can conserve it and how they can preserve it.

The girls basketball team will be travelling to Glenview on Thursday after school and the boys team from Glenview will be coming to Highglen next Tuesday.
