In a perfect world, the price of gas would be the same all over the province, but because gas is cheaper in the U.S., oil companies charge less in areas near the border and charge the rest of us more to compensate.
Then along comes the creation of Translink, which persuades the provincial government to implement a gasoline tax in their area to subsidize them. The result of the 16 cents per liter transit tax only raises the price of gas about 9 cents in the Vancouver area thus making us compensate again and indirectly subsidize their transit system. I have never heard one federal, provincial, or municipal local politician ever challenge this issue.
Now our municipal politicians are adding insult to injury trying to add another two cents per litre for pothole repair.
