In April 2016 I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
People asked if I planned to travel to Vancouver for treatment. I was confused as to why I would do that. Now it's easy to explain why it was the best plan being treated at the BC Cancer Centre for the North.
The staff at the clinic knew that I was overwhelmed with decisions and they took over some of the stuff that was making me anxious. Every appointment I needed to have was booked for me in advance and written on a card with all other appointments. I never had to call the clinic for follow up appointments unless something unexpected came up.
The oncologists, Dr. Valev, Dr. Geller and Dr. Roberts, were all compassionate, informative and straightforward when explaining treatment options, possible side effects and recovery. They spent a great deal of time explaining things to us. They were so wonderful.
I saw a nurse frequently during treatment, and spoke to nurses at the Nurses Helpline.
They were knowledgeable, reassuring, and I always felt better after speaking to or seeing one of them.
The people who administered my treatments are an exceptional bunch. I cannot recall one time where I did not crack a smile or giggle at something small someone would say or do before treatment. Smiling did not come easily some days. Brinda, Eden, Bronwyn, Jenn, Chris x2, Derek, Steve, Mary Anne and David - these people like what they are doing and it shows.
There were other medical professionals outside of the Cancer Clinic who were so helpful.
Dr. Sutter, who made sure my second surgery was done quickly. Dr. Palerme, who after surgery, provided me with a plethora of accurate information so I did not comb the internet and fill my mind with worst case scenarios. Dr. C Hagen, and Dr. Rowe who saw me in emergency, the radiologists, the ultrasound technicians and more.
Quality medical care is available in the North. The system at the Cancer Clinic allows the patient to focus on healing rather than worry about details.
Aside from the medical reasons, there is the emotional element that was fulfilled by staying home. I was surrounded by family and friends.
The impact of that support cannot be put into words.
My tumor was only 0.7 cm - detected only by mammogram and ultrasound.
Ladies, please don't put off having a mammogram - it could save your life.
