A thoughtful act reflects well on all

My mother and I attended the Nov. 11 memorial services at the cenotaph. As was experienced by all the people in attendance, the weather was very unaccommodating for the service.

My mother and I attended the Nov. 11 memorial services at the cenotaph. As was experienced by all the people in attendance, the weather was very unaccommodating for the service.

We did not have our umbrellas with us, and the consistently changing weather did not help for all waiting for the service to commence.

My mother had canvas shopping bags, which she placed on her knees and head. This wonderful woman dressed in black, came over to where we were situated and offered us her umbrella to use while the service was going on. I thanked her for her thoughtfulness. Her civility towards us was greatly appreciated.

This was a fabulous act of generosity as the weather changed from sleet, rain and then large, thick snowflakes which seem to inundate our bodies - but thankfully we were somewhat spared - all due to the thoughtfulness of this woman in black.

As the service ended, I was looking around for this woman, when she appeared and was willing to walk with us to the car and then retrieve her umbrella.

I declined as we would be able to return to the car without her umbrella. I thanked her again and we all left.

There is civility and kindness in our city thanks to the attributes of people like this woman.
