We write in response to a letter published in the September 15 online edition of The Prince George Citizen from Ms. Leanne Berry, a Prince George teacher. The letter describes serious allegations of disrespectful behaviour by a physician toward Ms. Berry.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia is responsible for ensuring that physicians meet expected standards of practice and conduct.
The Canadian Medical Association's Code of Ethics prohibits discrimination on specified grounds that include political affiliation. The Code of Ethics is endorsed by the College and reflected in a professional standard titled Access to Medical Care, posted on the College website. College standards are legally enforceable.
The College must seriously consider every complaint it receives. If unprofessional conduct is admitted or proven, physicians are subject to remedial and/or disciplinary consequences, depending on the circumstances. The College's sole mandate is to regulate the practice of medicine in the public interest. Patients who believe they have suffered discrimination or other forms of misconduct by their physician are encouraged to contact the College.
