A refugee in their own country

Reading the Nov. 23 editor's column gave me a pause to look at this problem another way.

There are refugees in every country of the world and I agree they need our assistance but at what expense?

Just look around in our town, now think about all the cities in Canada, it wouldn't be hard to find 25,000 people homeless and destitute, for no fault of their own, like loss of job, sickness and mental problems. These are Canadians citizen who are refugees in their own country. This number will not go away or get less.

Let us look at it another way, even if we got 20 per cent of our 25,000 homeless back on their feet and working,

that would be 5,000 more Canadian citizens paying income tax and contributing.

CBC wrote an article that said that the government expects the 25,000 refugees to cost Canadian taxpayers

$1.2 billion. This $1.2 billion would go a long way to helping our own Canadian homeless.

Cleaning our own backyard should be our government first and foremost priority before cleaning up other people's backyard.
