A matter of enforcement

Did you hear the news the City of Prince George created another bylaw forbidding people from putting their garbage cans out before 4 a.m.

Did you hear the news the City of Prince George created another bylaw forbidding people from putting their garbage cans out before 4 a.m. the day of pickup?

Now that they made the bylaw who, might I ask, will enforce it?

We all know it isn't going to be the city, that's for sure.

The city only operates from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, which in essence means any time before or after these hours you can do whatever you want as there is nobody on to enforce said bylaws.

If you call before or after city business hours you get an answering machine and the city relies on the good will of people to report offenders.

Good luck with that because it is well known that bylaw enforcement in this town is a joke and few citizens take it seriously.

I've read the bylaws the city has and believe me, there's no easier way to put oneself to sleep than reading a whole bunch of bylaws that no one has heard of, let alone knows that they exist.

And believe me it is a long and boring read - definitely not a page turner.

Want to impress people?

How about spending some money on an enforcement team that works Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has a visible presence because there sure isn't a visible presence right now. It's actually downright invisible and laughable.

But then again the city is infamous for making bylaws and not enforcing them.

I've said this many times before: if the city even enforced a quarter of the bylaws on the books they would be generating a positive revenue.

But hey, what do I know? I'm just a taxpayer who has an opinion that nobody wants to hear.
