Here's a look at some of the Canadian connections at this year's Oscars, which will be handed out March 7:

- Jason Reitman: Born in Montreal, Reitman has a shot at three Oscars. He's nominated for best director for "Up in the Air," which also landed him a best adapted screenplay nod. The film is also up for best picture. If it wins, Reitman would share the award with his father, legendary filmmaker Ivan Reitman. Both worked as producers on the film.

- James Cameron: Born in Kapuskasing, Ont., and raised near Niagara Falls, Ont., Cameron is nominated for best director for his sci-fi smash "Avatar." He also nabbed an editing nomination for "Avatar," and, as co-producer of the film, he's up for the best picture award. "Avatar" has a leading nine nominations.

- Christopher Plummer: The 80-year-old acting legend was born in Toronto and raised in Montreal (his grandfather is former prime minister Sir John Abbott). He's nominated for best supporting actor for playing Leo Tolstoy in "The Last Station."

- Neill Blomkamp: Born in South Africa, Blomkamp moved to Vancouver as a teen. He's nominated for best adapted screenplay for the aliens film "District 9," along with co-writer Terri Tatchell, also from Vancouver. Blomkamp also directed the film.

- Dan Kaufman, Peter Muyzers, Bob Habros: Kaufman and Muyzers, part of the team at Vancouver's Image Engine special effects house, share a nomination for best visual effects for "District 9." Habros, of another Vancouver-based effects company, the Embassy, is in on the nomination as well.

- Gordon Sim: The Toronto-based Sim is up for best set decoration for "Nine." He's already won an Oscar for his work on "Chicago."
