City council should be a little more up front with their explanation of the increases in garbage collection fees.
The insert that arrived with the recent semi-annual invoice states that rates have increased by $2
per year for a medium container. Just as I expect everyone else has done in the past, I paid promptly and was paying $81.90 twice yearly - a penalty of $9.10 would have applied if I had been late in payment. The old invoices stated the semi-annual fee to be $91 with a $9.10 reduction if paid promptly. Unless there were a lot of late payers, the new fees will generate $20.20 more per year for each medium container not $2 more. This is 12.3 per cent increase.
