A detour of frustration

I am writing this letter in response to the detour that was put in place while repair work was happening on Blackwater Rd, June 21.

I am writing this letter in response to the detour that was put in place while repair work was happening on Blackwater Rd, June 21.

My extreme frustration comes from the fact that the motorists that drive the Blackwater Road like they are running the Indy 500 now have been running that same Indy 500 speed on Muralt and East Beaverly Roads for the detour.

My sister and my niece almost got hit by a speeding motorist, and when my sister tried to signal the driver to slow down the driver merely fingered her and continued to speed along the very rural and family dominated residential road. Kids bike this road, there are lots of walkers, joggers, family pets...yes family pets...of which our lives were drastically and forever changed yesterday when a speeding driver ran over our beautiful little dog Lily, the motorist never even stopped. My 7-year-old niece had to watch as my sister loaded Lily up in her car, bleeding and hurt, so that Lily could be rushed to the vet, where Lily passed away of her injuries. I am just sickened by this.

So, I wont just vent my frustration, I want to suggest that the road contractors be required to do their due diligence to ensure the safety of those on a new detour route. I would like to see large signs placed along the detour route reiterating the speed limit (because it is a lower speed limit than the normal route these drivers take) and additionally I want the road contractors to put in temporary speed bumps where detours go through residential areas such as this. The temporary speed bumps would need to have sign age as well to warn motorists of course.

At least this might help when these detours have to be put in place. And to that motorist that hit and killed our Lily, all I can say is you know who you are and I hope you feel the guilt of not stopping.

This is my first letter to the editor, and it was prompted by all the tears that came from last night's events.
