A bit of speculation

The word evolution at its basic definition means change. If that was the meaning Todd Whitcombe used in his column (Aug. 8) he's right on. If he means speculation, then he's incorrect.

The description of the fence lizards adapting to the stress of fire ants is just that, adaptation. The species is selecting for traits that help it survive fire ant attacks. This may produce different breeds, it will certainly strengthen the species but no more than that. In order to evolve into a separate species, there would need to be genetic mutation accompanying that adaptation. Having read two articles on that story, I've found no claims that such mutation is underway. Fence lizards are selecting for genetic traits that were already present, rapidly adapting and fortunately for them, will thus survive as a stronger species.

There may well be examples of ongoing evolution/speculation, but this isn't one of them.
