Enbridge Safety Record Not That Great

In the May 19 Citizen article of the latest Enbridge activities, some statistics were thrown out by the company executives. They seemed very pleased of their 2010 safety record. In their own words they indicate they transported 99.99 per cent of 750 million barrels of oil safely.

From this, one would be able to realize that they moved 0.01 percent of those 750 million barrels of oil in an "unsafe" manner.

According to my calculator, Enbridge is stating they had problems transporting 75,000 barrels (about 12 million litres) of oil in 2010 - it was not moved safely.

This is a lot of oil, especially if it is in the Douglas Inlet washing up on the shores of Kitimat and killing marine life or dumped in an inaccessible area of the central interior of B.C. leaching into previously pristine land, rivers and streams.

I think Enbridge is pointing to the reality of pipelines - over time they do break and leak and the amount of oil leaked is huge in any given year. Their own performance data just supports this fact.
