Weapons find leads to jail term

One of two people arrested in September when police uncovered a cache of weapons in their car during a traffic stop was sentenced Thursday on weapons charges.

Dylan Leslie Prince, 21, was sentenced to 290 days in jail for possession of a firearm contrary to an order and to a concurrent term of 180 days for possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Prince, who has remained in custody since his arrest, must also serve one year probation upon completing the time and was issued a 10-year firearms prohibition.

Prince and Shayla Rae Crispin, 26, were arrested Sept. 23 when, according to police, members of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. uniform gang enforcement team noticed a car accelerate away from a check in the 2200 block of Norwood Street.

They found a a spring assisted knife, a bag of an unknown substance believed to be street level drugs, a baseball bat and a loaded shotgun, a loaded .22 calibre rifle and ammunition.

Crown subsequently approved 14 charges against Prince and 12 of them were stayed on Friday.

The case against Crispin, who faces 16 charges, remains before the court. She was released from custody on an undertaking on Wednesday.
