A 34-year-old Quesnel woman was killed Tuesday evening when she was struck by a sand truck while walking along the Barkerville Highway.

Quesnel RCMP, who were called to the scene near Drummond Road shortly after 7 p.m., said the woman was walking east when she was hit by the eastbound truck and died at the scene.

The driver of the privately-owned truck was not injured and alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors, RCMP said.

"At the time of the accident, the roads were wet due to a light rain and there was no artificial lighting," said Quesenl RCMP Sgt. Richard Weseen. "Witnesses reported that they had to swerve to avoid the female just prior to the collision."

The highway was detoured onto Schemenauer Road for about four hours while the police completed their investigation.

The woman's name was not released.
