A semi truck driver based in Prince George was issued a hefty fine and his vehicle impounded for a week after he was caught going 150 km/h east of Smithers on Saturday.

RCMP said he was pulled over shortly after 2 a.m. on Highway 16.

"This kind of driving behaviour is completely unacceptable on our highways," BC RCMP traffic services Sgt. Shawn McLaughlin said. "The potential for disaster is high at those speeds, and the driver was putting himself and other motorists at risk of injury or death had a collision occurred."

The ticket carries a $368 fine and three points. The driver’s employer was notified where it could pickup the trailer, which was loaded with groceries, RCMP said. It is not known if the driver in this case will face any consequences from his employer.
