One of two men arrested in a high-profile takedown was sentenced last week to a further 66 days in jail followed by three years probation.

John Robert Barton Craig, 34, was issued the term in provincial court on Oct. 15 after pleading guilty to five counts from a July 17, 2019 arrest that forced closure of Highway 97 at Noranda Road.

Craig and Jamie Hal Hammerstrom, 42, were apprehended when a vehicle linked to a theft of a gun and ammunition from a Chief Lake home earlier in the day was spotted by police.

An RCMP officer fired off a round in the act although no one was injured.

Craig had remained in custody since the arrest, for a total of 455 days. He was sentenced on one count each of robbery, possessing stolen property, resisting arrest and two firearms-related charges.

Hammerstrom, who was released on $1,000 bail in early April, is continuing to fight the charges. A trial on his matter is set to begin on Nov. 9 in provincial court and is scheduled to last eight days.
