Protesters hold up signs on Saturday morning at the corner of Highway 16 West and Ferry Avenue during a rally Saturday in opposition to the proposed name change to Kelly Road Secondary School.

The school district superintendent and her deputy will be conducting classroom visits this week to get student feedback on the proposed name change for Kelly Road Secondary School.

“Last week, some students felt compelled to choose protest to voice their feelings," superintendent Anita Richardson said in a statement issued Monday.

"We feel strongly that we need to give all students the ability to share their thoughts and feelings while we are here to listen. We will do that be making ourselves available to them in their classrooms.”

A proposal to rename the school Shas Ti, which means "grizzly path" in the Dakelh language, when the new high school is opened in September, has created an uproar although trustees only voted in favour of an engagement process for the idea.

A meeting will also be held with KRSS teachers and staff. School district trustees and staff were also busy over the weekend going through the comments received so far, according to school board chair Tim Bennett.

“We were informed by the comments, many of which came from students who were unhappy about the process to date, but already had creative suggestions for moving forward together," Bennett said.

The school district has set up a special email, kellyroadfeedback@sd57.bc.ca, to gather further opinions on the issue and a question and answer section has been posted on the school district's website regarding engagement opportunities, events, timelines and possible changes.
