School District 57's updated COVID-19 safety plan will likely be completed this week, acting superintendent Cindy Heitmen said.

Consultation on the plan is completed and the final changes will be made this week, Heitmen told the district board of education on Tuesday.

"Our plan is in line with the Ministry of Education and orders from the public health officer," Heitmen said.

On Feb. 4, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Education Minister Jennifer Whiteside ordered increased mask wearing in schools.

"We made the adjustments to our procedures immediately," Heitmen said. "Our schools transitioned very well with the new plans – there were no concerns."

Students in middle and secondary schools and staff for kindergarten through Grade 12 are  required to wear non-medical masks in all indoor areas, except when sitting or standing at their desk, when there is another barrier in place or when eating or drinking.

Previously students and staff were only required to wear masks in public areas of the school like hallways, libraries and on school busses.

New, stricter guidelines were put in place for phys. ed. and music classes on Feb. 4 as well.
