RCMP officers conducted roadside checks on Saturday night as they launched the CounterAttack impaired driver campaign.

RCMP took 16 drivers off the road during the first weekend of this holiday season's CounterAttack campaign against driving while impaired.

Six were issued 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions with a 30-day vehicle impound. Six more were issued three-day immediate roadside prohibitions, two were given 24-hour prohibitions and two were given 12-hour prohibitions.

RCMP said they also also came across two people who were driving while prohibited, two driving contrary to their licence, one driving without a licence and one speeder.

Traffic sections for both the Prince George RCMP and North District RCMP are conducting the campaign which will be continued into the new year.

"There is zero tolerance for those persons that choose to drive while impaired by drugs including alcohol" said Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass. "There is never an excuse for risking the lives of other road users because you failed to plan properly."

If you witness an intoxicated person get behind the wheel or see a vehicle being driven in a dangerous or erratic manner, call 911 immediately. Your actions could save a life.
