Prince George RCMP has started bike patrols to increase their presence downtown as the weather warms.

Prince George RCMP have started taking to the pedals as a way to patrol the city's downtown.

Along with more foot patrols, shoppers and merchants can expect to see more RCMP on bikes as a way to compliment the regular patrols by vehicle.

The initiative began Monday and will continue throughout the summer.

"These areas are shopping and entertainment destinations in our community" said Supt. Shaun Wright. "Reducing crime and calls for service is a priority for the detachment, and it will be noticeable."

The increased presence coincides with a reopening of businesses as restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic are loosened. Downtown Prince George executive director Colleen Van Mook welcomed the step.

"We know that many are now re-opening and want to see their customers again," she said. "We are pleased to know that the RCMP will be back out with feet and wheels on the ground to help us welcome people back to the heart of our city and our great Downtown Prince George businesses".
