The driver of a pickup truck died at the scene, North District RCMP said, following a collision with a tractor trailer Thursday night on Highway 16 east of the city.

Initial indications are that the driver of the tractor trailer lost control, jacknifed and went into the eastbound lane where it collided with the pickup, although police added the investigation was still in the early stages.

"At the time of the collision, temperature was at the freezing mark with heavy wet snow falling and roads were described as slushy," RCMP added.

The collision occurred shortly before 8 p.m. near Upper Fraser. The stretch was closed in both directions for some time to allow investigators to gather evidence.

The name of the victim was not released.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash, or may have information regarding the crash to call the North District RCMP Traffic Services at 250 649-4004 or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222-8477.
