A 28-year-old local man suffered a single gunshot wound on Tuesday night in what Prince George RCMP are describing as a targeted, drug-related shooting.

Police said they were called just before 8 p.m. to a report of multiple shots fired on Wiggins Place, off Moss Avenue in South Fort George. Two dark-coloured vehicles were seen fleeing the area following the incident.

About 15 minutes later, police were told that the victim was at the hospital with what is believed to be a non-life-threatening wound. His name was not provided.

At about the same time, police received a report of a vehicle fire on Moyie Street, just a few blocks from the scene of the shooting.

"Investigators believe that the vehicle was deliberately set on fire and is associated to the shooting," RCMP said.

Police are treating the shooting as an act of attempted murder and have made the investigation a priority. There is no reason to believe the general public is at risk, they added.

A Wiggins Place resident said he heard a loud crack of gunfire and thought he heard seven shots but was later told 14 casings were found at the scene. He said the neighbourhood is quiet with no problem houses and suggested those involved live elsewhere.

Because of the poor street lighting and a pile of snow in the middle of cul de sac, he was unable to get a good view when he looked out to see what was going on but said it appeared two cars had pulled alongside each other then sped away after the gunfire.

A small pile of broken glass remained on the cul de sac in front of a home at the corner of Wiggins and Moss on Wednesday morning.
