Lheidli T’enneh First Nation elders Kenora Stewart and Clifford Quaw, accompanied by chief Clay Pountney, began Tuesday’s meeting by asking the board to consider renaming the new Kelly Road Secondary School under construction.
Scheduled to open in September, the new school would be called Shas Ti Secondary School. The name means ‘grizzly path”’ and would reflect the area’s past as a grizzly bear habitat.
Board vice-chair Trent Derrick put forth a motion that the board unanimously passed to engage in the renaming process.
The $44.3 million school will hold 900 students and will replace the original Kelly Road built in the early 1960s. The new building sits behind the current school on Handlen Road. Demolition of the old school is expected to start this fall and be completed in the spring of 2021.
