Seven School District 57 facilities have tested positive for high levels of lead in the drinking water.

The results, released Thursday, say six elementary schools and one daycare in Prince George show concentrations that exceed the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.

The district said it would follow advice in the consultant's report and start a daily flushing of the water systems, which will address the high concentrations.

Between May 18 and June 9, the district tested all active and closed schools as well as its administration office.

It found the following buildings had "higher than acceptable lead concentrations:"

  • Edgewood Elementary
  • Foothills Elementary
  • Heritage Elementary
  • Nukko Lake Elementary
  • Nusdeh Yoh Elementary
  • Pineview Elementary
  • Kool Kats Daycare

Interim superintendent Sharon Cairns said the district will not be releasing the preliminary report from the engineers.

"Following Northern Health guidlelines we have some initial flushing to do and re-testing of the sites," she said by email. "To release this report would be premature."

Earlier this year, both the Ministry of Education and Northern Health called on school districts to undergo testing after four schools in Prince Rupert were found to have elevated lead levels in their drinking water.
