Water levels on the Fraser River are expected to level off today and begin dropping over the weekend, according to estimates by the B.C. River Forecast Centre.

City staff and firefighters will continue to monitor river levels over the weekend, a statement issued by the city on Friday said. Water levels on the Fraser were expected to peak at 9.3 metres.

"Yesterday, as a precautionary measure, the city notified the B.C. government that it has activated its Emergency Operations Centre," the city statement said. "No emergency alerts or orders have yet been declared."

On Wednesday, city staff advised Farrell Street residents to warn them about potential flooding. Sand and sandbags have been made available to residents on the street.

As of Friday, a large section of Paddlewheel Park was under water. Paddlewheel Park, Hazelton Park and Cottonwood Island Park were all closed this week, due to flooding.

The Heritage River Trail from the Cameron Street Bridge to Taylor Drive is also closed to the public.

The city is urging residents to use caution whenever walking near the rivers.
