The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George issued an evacuation order for one property and evacuation alerts for 39 other properties along Upper Mud River Road on Thursday.

The evacuation alerts have been put in place in the area, located approximately 25 kilometres south of Prince George, because of flooding on the Chilako River, district spokesperson Renee McCloskey said.

"The information we got from the River Forecast Centre, they advised the river is rising about a centimetre every 15 minutes," McCloskey said. "It's the same area that had flooding in May 2018. At that time the peak was 8.44 metres. It's expected to hit that this evening."

Residents in the evacuation alert area are asked to be prepared to level quickly and takes steps to protect themselves and their property including:

• Make arrangements for pets and livestock to be moved to safety.

• Prepare a 72-hour survival kit for family members.

• Move equipment and farm implements to higher ground.

• Gather important papers in a water-tight container and move valuables to alternative locations.

The public is reminded to use extreme caution around rivers and streams, as high flows can cause bank erosion and instability and currents can be volatile and unpredictable.
