Costco Canada customers are being asked to wear face masks when they shop at one of their big box stores.

"To protect our members and employees, it is recommended that all Costco members and guests wear a mask or face covering that covers the mouth and nose, at all times while on Costco premises," the company says in a posting.

It does not apply to children under two years old and to people unable to wear a mask due to a medical condition.

"The use of a mask or face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing," the company says. "Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while on Costco premises."

The posting is titled "Face Mask Requirement" but as of Monday, customers were being let into the Prince George store without masks while employees were wearing them.

They have been mandatory at Costco stores in the United States since May 4.
