City's unemployment rate 5.9 per cent in March

The city's unemployment rate continued its downward trajectory in March.

It stood at 5.9 per cent, according  Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers, compared to 8.8 per cent for the same month last year and when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.

The rate hit a peak of 11.8 per cent in May 2020.

Coinciding with the drop in the unemployment rate, the number of people is up, reaching 51,300 last month, compared to 47,400 for March 2020. 

The unemployment rate in February was 6.4 per cent but 52,500 were holding down jobs.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not separate full-time from part-time employment.
