OTTAWA — The defending Vanier Cup champions needed a second-half comeback and some extra time added on to kick off the 2018 season with a win.
Marc Liegghio hit a 36-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Western Mustangs over the Carleton Ravens 26-23 on Sunday in USports football action.
Liegghio hit four field goals in the game, with his third putting the Mustangs (1-0) ahead 23-20 late in the fourth quarter after trailing 20-3 at halftime.
Mike Domagala hit a 50-yard FG as time expired to force overtime for the Ravens (0-1).
Western quarterback Chris Merchant went 19-of-26 for 212 yards with one touchdown and one interception while running back Cedric Joseph rushed 20 times for 101 yards on the ground.
Carleton's Michael Arruda was 13 for 28 passing for 297 yards with two TDs and two picks.
