VANCOUVER — Peter Guarasci, a longtime player for Canada's men's basketball team, has been named head coach and general manager of the Fraser Valley Bandits.

The Bandits are one of six teams in the fledgling Canadian Elite Basketball League which will begin its inaugural season on May 9.

Guarasci played alongside Steve Nash at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and also represented Canada at the 1995 World University Games and the 1998 world championships. He also played professonally for 12 years in Germany, Spain and Italy.

Guarasci earned a reputation as an elite defender while playing NCAA Division 1 basketball for Fairfield, finishing in the top-10 in blocks in the conference. He also played two seasons at Simon Fraser University, earning a pair of team MVP awards and an NAIA all-American award.

Guarasci turned his attention to coaching after his playing days, and was the head coach of the University of British Columbia Okanagan's men's team from 2012 to 2018.
