CARY, N.C. — Canadian international Lindsay Agnew, who played for Sydney FC in Australia's W-League Grand Final in March, has signed a one-year contract plus an option with the defending NWSL champion North Carolina Courage.
Taken 19th overall by the Washington Spirit in the 2017 NWSL college draft, the former Ohio State star was traded to Houston in January 2018. She was waived in January 2020, paving the way to move Down Under.
A former forward, the 25-year-old Agnew played fullback/wingback for Sydney.
A free agent after the Australian season ended, she attended the North Carolina training camp as a free agent. Agnew joins fellow Canadian Stephanie Labbe at the Courage.
Agnew has won 14 caps for Canada, most recently playing against Brazil and New Zealand in a tournament in China in November. Part of last summer's World Cup roster, she hopes to crack the Olympic team for Tokyo next year.
Agnew was born in Kingston where her father Gary Agnew was coach of the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs. Now an associate coach with the Utica Comets, the Vancouver Canucks' AHL farm team, Gary Agnew was previously an assistant coach and interim head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins and head coach of the AHL Syracuse Crunch and OHL London Knights.
The Courage also announced the signings of 2020 draft picks Ally Watt, Addisyn Merrick and Sinclaire Miramontez.
North Carolina kicks off the NWSL Challenge Cup on June 27 against the Portland Thorns in Utah.
