Winning weekend for volleyball teams

Two squads from the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club dug up silver and bronze at the Okanagan Super Series on the weekend in Kelowna.

The 15-and-under boys Kodiaks, coached by Jay Guillet and Todd Kuc, won the silver medal in their 13-team division, while the 16-and-under boys Kodiaks, coached by Linden Smith and Erik Minek, won the bronze medal out of 12 teams.

The 15U Kodiaks lost Sunday's final in two sets (25-13, 25-7) to Coquitlam's Focus Blur.

That was the Kodiaks' first loss of the tournament, after they posted a 3-0 round-robin record with victories against Fraser Valley, Apex Green (Vancouver) and the Kelowna Kings.

In the playoff bracket, the Kodiaks edged East Kootenay 2-1 (23-25, 25-17, 15-6) in the quarter-final and defeated the Langley-based Force 2-0 (25-18), 25-19) in the semifinal to advance to the final.

The 16U Kodiaks defeated the Eagles from Delta in straight sets (25-22, 25-12) to win the bronze medal.

The 16U squad posted a 2-1 round-robin record with 2-0 victories against the Eagles from Delta and Air Attack Black from Richmond. The Kelowna Klutch defeated the Kodiaks in straight-sets in the final round-robin game.

The Kodiaks still qualified for the playoff round and defeated Apex Prime 2-0 in their first match and Apex Exergy 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

In the semifinal, Fraser Valley defeated the Kodiaks 2-0 (25-17, 25-10).

The Kodiaks 14U squad won the silver medal at the Okanagan Super Series Feb. 28 to March 1.
