Wildcats win a thriller

The Skeena Wildcats were moments away from seeing a championship title slip through their grasp.

Brennan Jay and Patrick Kurek made sure it didn't happen.

The Wildcats were battling the Duchess Park Condors in the final game of a College Heights junior boys basketball tournament. In the Saturday night tilt, the Condors took a 40-36 lead when Eric Kidwell drained a three-pointer with 42 seconds left on the clock. A Duchess victory appeared imminent but Jay drove hard to the bucket twice in the final 20 seconds and scored both times. The game was suddenly tied, 40-40, and the Wildcats went on to win 50-45 in overtime.

In the three-minute extra session the tank-like Kurek produced eight of Skeena's 10 points, including a backbreaking trey with 1:18 to play.

"Patrick was clutch in the overtime and Brennan, sometimes he's too quick for his own good but he got the job done tonight," said Wildcats coach Brian Demedeiros.

"The kids persevered and showed a lot of heart. It was great to watch them. We've only been practicing for a week but we've got some talented kids and some shooters."

Kurek finished with a game-high 25 points, most of them on jump shots. The fleet-footed Jay, meanwhile, ended with 13 points. Both players are in their Grade 10 seasons.
