The Cedars Christian Eagles gave the Houston Christian Wildcats their toughest game of the season. But, they couldn't prevent the Wildcats from repeating as B.C. champions.
In the gold-medal game of the senior girls single-A basketball provincials, played Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre, the Wildcats answered a charge from the Eagles in the third quarter and went on to post an 80-63 victory. The final result matched the pre-tournament rankings, which had Houston at No. 1 and Cedars at No. 2.
This was the second consecutive year the teams played for the B.C. banner and the second disappointment for the Eagles, who ultimately had no answer for Houston's dominant post player, Ruth Hamblin. The six-foot-six Hamblin blocked countless shots while on defence and scored a game-high 29 points, most of them in unchallenged fashion from directly under the hoop. The Wildcats, however, showed they were much more than a one-person show, with Kelly Ewald and Allison Seinen driving hard to the bucket all night and scoring 17 points each. Houston guard Lindsey Meints (11 points) added her outside shooting to the mix and the Wildcats were too strong for the Eagles to overcome.
