Nothing like a little home cooking to change a hockey team’s outlook.
The win-starved Northern Capitals felt right at home in the friendly confines of Kin 2 arena and that led to three straight wins in their B.C. Hockey Female Midget Triple-A League series against the Fraser Valley Rush.
The Capitals got two-goal efforts from Katie Young and Braxtyn Shawara Sunday morning to beat the Rush 5-2, their third win in less than three days against the Rush. Caily Mellott had the other Capitals goal and also picked up two assists to remain on top of the league’s scoring race. Mellott now has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in 12 games. Jessica Douglas countered for the Rush, who trailed 2-0 after one period and 4-2 after two.
The Caps beat the Rush 4-1 on Saturday and 5-0 to open the series Friday. Friday’s win ended the Capitals’ five-game losing streak.
Power-play goals from Reilly MacLachlan and Kenna Lloyd and a pair of even-strength goal from Mellott and Jordan Shanks led to Saturday’s win.
Olivia Davis notched the shutout Friday in the Capitals nets. Shawara picked up two goals, with singles to Jordan McMillan, Shanks and Mellott.
The three wins improved the Capitals’ season record to 7-5-0 as they climbed into second place in the six-team league. The Rush (1-8-3) remained in last place.
The Capitals head for Victoria this week to begin a three-game weekend set against the Vancouver Island Seals.
