The local business community is stepping up to the plate to make the 2013 World Baseball Challenge a success.
The WBC organizing committee announced the return of Northern Spirit Transportation as the transportation sponsor. Northern Spirit supplied busses for the teams in the two previous Prince George tournaments in 2009 and 2011 and was also on hand for the 2012 Re/Max Baseball Canada Senior Championship.
"Without a doubt, one of the best areas of these past events has been our transportation arrangement, professionally handled by Paul Clermont and his people - they are outstanding at what they do, and how they treat our guests," said WBC co-chair and marketing director Shawn Rice. "They make a real connection as ambassadors. And [the teams] are always impressed with their punctuality, their spirit, and their passion for this event."
For the second year, WBC tournament winners will be presented championship rings, designed and crafted by Michael and Caren Tobin of Michael's Jewellers.
"It really is the cherry on top, for the players and coaches of the champions to get championship rings," said Rice. "It's that touch of class that completes the event. The Cuban players were so impressed when presented with these rings in 2011."
n Canadian Blood Services will have a display booth at Citizen Field during this year's tournament, Aug. 13-22. The blood bank is in desperate need of donors and will be trying to line up people to come to the clinic on Westwood Drive to help fill its long list of open appointments during the 10-day tournament.
n Tournament volunteers are needed. Got to worldbaseball.ca for more information.
