The quest for provincial gold in high school volleyball starts today.
Two local senior boys teams -- the College Heights Cougars and D.P. Todd Trojans -- are in Kelowna for the double-A championship tournament. Today, the Cougars have matches against Princess Margaret of Surrey, Highland (Comox) and Nanaimo District. The Trojans, meanwhile, will take on Prince Charles of Creston, Pacific Christian of Victoria and Clarence Fulton of Vernon. Matches will continue through Saturday, with the championship final scheduled for that night.
On the girls side, provincial tournaments will start on Thursday. At the single-A level, the Cedars Christian School Eagles will be in Duncan. On opening day, the Eagles will take on A.L. Fortune (Enderby) Campbell River and Langley.
In the double-A division, the D.P. Todd Trojans will be on the court at Pacific Academy in Surrey. On Thursday, D.P. Todd will hit kill shots against Kalamalka of Vernon, Elphinstone (Gibsons) and Smithers.
In the triple-A category, the College Heights Cougars and Duchess Park Condors will be at North Delta's Seaquam secondary school for provincials. The Cougars will square off against Qualicum's Ballenas, Brookswood of Langley and Point Grey of Vancouver on Thursday, while the Condors will meet Crofton House (Vancouver), Vernon and Rick Hansen (Abbotsford).
All championship finals in girls competition will be held on Saturday night.
Some provincial tournaments have already been completed. At the single-A boys championship last weekend in Duncan, the Cedars Christian School Eagles finished in eighth place.
At the junior level, a 24-team girls tournament wrapped up Saturday in Delta. Two local squads -- College Heights and Duchess Park -- finished 12th and 19th respectively.
At the junior boys provincials, the College Heights Cougars made it to the 16-team championship draw but lost their first match to powerhouse MEI of Abbotsford, which went on to claim gold for the second consecutive year. The D.P. Todd Trojans ended up in the relegation draw.
