Under-18 teams start provincials with win, draw

Opening day was kind to the Prince George Minor Soccer Association select teams.

With five teams in the 2013 Boys Provincial B Cup hosted at Rotary Fields in Prince George the home teams posted one win, two draws and two losses on the first day of competition.

The tournament features teams in six divisions from under 13 to under 18. The Kodiaks have two teams in both the under 14 and under 18 divisions and a single team in the under 16 group.

Both under-18 Kodiaks teams started the weekend tournament off well. The Kodiaks A team earned a 3-0 win over the Saanich Fusion, while the Prince George B team drew a 1-1 draw with the powerhouse squad from ICSF United on the Lower Mainland.

The under 16 Kodiaks lost 4-0 to the Cliff Avenue United Lore of Vancouver, while the under 14 Kodiaks earned a win and a tie. The Kodiaks' B team lost 6-0 to CCB Galaxy and the A team managed a 2-2 tie with Gorge FC.

In the under-13 division, the Kamloops Blaze tied the Terrace Kermodes 1-1, Saanich Fusion FC beat the Nelson Selects 5-1, LYS United beat Williams Lake 6-0 and Surrey FC United beat the Quesnel Strikers 14-0.

Other scores in the under-14 division had the Nelson Selects losing to South Burnaby Metro Strikers 3-0 and the Pinnacles FC falling 4-2 to Terrace.

Scores in the under-15 division saw the Royal City Westminster Utd. beat the Kootenay South Big Horns 4-1 and Gorge FC take down the Quesnel Strikers 8-1.

In the under-16 division, Kelowna United and Terrace played to a 1-1 draw, while North Van Fury beat Nelson Selects 4-1. The Campbell River Blue Backs were also winners scoring a 3-1 victory over the Williams Lake Storm.

The under-17 division had the Surrey FC Rangers beating the Vancouver FC Blue Rangers 4-2, the Nelson Selects knocking off Juan de Fuca 1-0 and Terrace winning over Vernon Utd. 2-0. Finally, the Surrey FC Rangers earned a 6-0 win over Juan de Fuca.

In the two under 18 games not involving the Kodiaks, it was the Pinnacles FC beating Bulkley Valley Rapids 1-0 and the Coastal FC United taking down the Quesnel Strikers 6-1.

Games continue today at 10 a.m., noon, 2 and 4 p.m.

The championship games in all divisions will be played Sunday, 2 p.m.
