With Emily Kaehn handling the offensive rebounding choirs and Mercedes Van Koughnett taking care of the other half of the court, the UNBC Timberwolves were in good hands Saturday night in Langley.
Kaehn grabbed eight loose balls off the glass and had four more in the opposite end for UNBC while collecting a game-high 19 points in a 65-60 win over the Trinity Western University Spartans to complete a two-game CIS Canada West sweep. Van Koughnett got her hands on 12 defensive rebounds and had four steals in the victory. That came a day after UNBC defeated TWU 67-61 on the strength of Van Koughnett's 21-point, 15-rebound performance
Holy Strom led the Spartans Saturday with 13 points. The Spartans were ahead 32-27 at the half.
The pair of victories improved the T-wolves' record to 3-3, tied for third with Thompson Rivers University in the Canada West Pacific Division women's standings, while TRU dropped to 1-5.
In the men's game that followed Saturday in Langley, Jesse Jeffers picked up a career-high 21 points and had seven rebounds and Kelvin Smith added 16 points to lead TWU to a 92-73 win over UNBC, giving the Spartans a split of the weekend series.
Jibreel Stevens collected 20 points and went 4-for-13 from three-point range as the T-wolves' top scorer. Charles Barton sunk 14 points, and Franck Olivier Kouagnia and Marcus MacKay each had 10 in a losing cause.
The T-wolves began the weekend Friday with a 79-65 win over TWU. Jeff Chu had 19 points and Barton contributed 18 in the win. The T-wolves hit for 13 treys in that game.
Saturday's loss left UNBC with a 2-4 record, tied with UBC for sixth place in the Pacific, while the Spartans are at 3-3, tied for third with Mount Royal and Fraser Valley. UVic is 6-0 atop the standings.
