One game, one win for the UNBC men's soccer team.

The Timberwolves were victorious in the preseason opener Saturday, beating the Ottawa Fury FC 2-1 at Algonquin College. In their first season in the Canada West, the T-wolves finished with a 0-14 record.

The Fury, a combination of under-20 players and premier development league players, opened the scoring in the 35th minute, but it didn't take long for UNBC to respond. T-wolves rookie, and Calgary product, Jake Vickers found the net behind the Fury keeper on a rebound from a Cheona Edzerza shot to tie the game at 1-1 at the half.

Vickers and Edzerza continued to show their chemistry in the second half when Vickers won a battle for the ball in the Fury end and passed the ball to Edzerza, but before the Prince George native could take a shot a Fury defender put his foot on the ball and sent it flying into his own net in the 56th minute.

The T-wolves out shot the Fury 19-11. Ty Venhola and Mitch Macfarlane split time in the UNBC net.

T-wolves second-year coach Alan Alderson said he was proud of how his attacking players played and with the number of scoring opportunities they generated.

"We also have some very good players that can contribute off the bench and a few first year players who made their debut in a UNBC jersey," said Alderson. "It was a very good day for our team."

The T-wolves eastern preseason road trip continues Monday when they face McGill with kickoff slated for 4:30 p.m. PST.

UNBC begins his second Canada West season at home, Friday, Sept. 6 at the North Cariboo Soccer League fields. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
