UNBC goalie Brityn Hinsche weathers shooting storm in losses to UBC

Williams Lake product made career-high 15 saves in 6-0 defeat Saturday

Brityn Hinsche knew when she signed up to be a soccer goalie for the UNBC Timberwolves there would be times when she would be under siege.

That happened on back-to-back occasions over the weekend in Vancouver in consecutive 6-0 losses Friday and Saturday to the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds.

Ranked No. 1 in the country, the T-birds were relentless and Hinsche kept them from reaching double figures. The 20-year-old second-year ‘keeper from Williams Lake turned in a seven-save outing Friday and topped that with another outstanding effort in the rematch Saturday when she made a career-high 15 saves, several of which were highlight-reel quality.

Hinsche now ranks second in U SPORTS Canada West with 108 saves through 12 games, the sixth-highest save total ever recorded in the conference by a goalie in a single season. Only Madison Priebe, who has stopped 122 shots for the University of Winnipeg, has had a busier season in the crease.

Both goalies recorded shutouts when the teams met in a scoreless draw in Winnipeg Sept. 16.

The T-wolves (0-11-1) wrap up their season this weekend at Masich Place Stadium. They host the UBC-Okanagan Lakers (7-3-2) Friday at 5:30 p.m., then take on the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (4-6-2) Sunday at noon.

The UNBC men are also at home, coming off a bye weekend. The T-wolves (2-7-2) play the Fraser Valley Cascades (2-10-0) Friday at 7:45 p.m. and again Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
