UNBC alumni coach drops in on former team

CALGARY -- Mike Woollard was going to book a trip that would take him to the sun and sand. Instead, he decided to fly north to Calgary, betting that when he got here, he'd have a chance to see the UNBC Northern Timberwolves run the hardwood at nationals.

He made the right call.

Woollard, an assistant coach for the UNBC men's basketball team last season, is now teaching and coaching at Minot State University in North Dakota. He's happy to be in the crowd for the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national championship, being played at SAIT Polytechnic.

"It's our spring break at Minot and my sister lives here, so I kind of planned to come visit her and I knew that nationals was here," said the 38-year-old Woollard. "I had a choice between Florida and here and I chose here because I had a feeling the guys would be here. I booked coming here quite a while ago."

Woollard said it has been "great" to watch the Timberwolves perform on the national stage and, on a personal level, to hook up with them again.

"There are a great bunch of guys in that locker room," he said. "It's kind of like old times. It's a lot scarier sitting in the stands watching them than on the bench. They're not good for the heart."
