Ultimate season to open in P.G.

Flying discs will invade Prince George this summer when Disc Sports puts on its annual Ultimate League and beginner skills clinic.

Flying discs will invade Prince George this summer when Disc Sports puts on its annual Ultimate League and beginner skills clinic.

The popular sport, previously known as Ultimate Frisbee, will fly into town starting May 3 for a summer of the coed, non-contact, self-officiated team sport. Points are scored in ultimate by passing the Frisbee down the field into the opponent's end zone. The nonstop movement of the sport combines the athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skill of football and the fast-break transitions of basketball.

The league is a beginner's league geared towards new, novice and experienced players and will play Thursday evenings during May and June. It costs $65 per player or $55 for players who register before April 20. The fee includes a skills clinic for newcomers April 26 and an all-day tournament June 23.

Players interested in Ultimate can register on the website at www.pgultimate.bc.ca.

Games are played at the Prince George secondary school fields on Massey Drive from May 3 to June 28, between 6-8 p.m.

Ultimate is one of the world's fastest growing sports played in 42 countries by people of all ages. The only thing needed to play is a positive attitude and a willingness to have fun with simple and easy to pick up rules.

"With only 10 rules, Ultimate is easy to learn but challenging to master since a Frisbee does not behave like a ball," said Greg Jonuk, PGDS executive member in a news release.
