U-16 T-wolves medal in Kelowna

The Prince George Youth Soccer Association under-16 Timberwolves can now call themselves provincial silver medallists. And they're darn proud of it.

The Prince George Youth Soccer Association under-16 Timberwolves can now call themselves provincial silver medallists.

And they're darn proud of it.

The boys soccer side was edged 2-1 in the final of the Provincial B Cup championship (Les Sinnot Memorial Cup) by Kelowna United in Richmond on Sunday.

"They did everything they could that was asked of them," said Twolves coach Brad Stewart. "They've only been together as a team since March when the single age group was formed. It's a credit to them as human beings who brought into the program."

The Twolves posted an undefeated 2-0-1 round-robin record, scoring a 1-0 victory over Cowichan Valley Spartans; a 1-1 tie against Kootenay South Storm, and a 2-1 victory against the Royal City Westminster United.

Justin Hunter broke a scoreless tie in the second half against the Spartans to give Prince George the win.

The Storm marched out to a 1-0 after the first half of play, but the Timberwolves answered with a tally from Seth Boulianne in the second half.

With a 1-0-1 record going into their match against Royal City on Saturday, Prince George needed a win to advance to Sunday's final or else face a slew of tiebreakers.

After a scoreless first half, Prince George's attack got organized in the second half as Corbin Norman and Kyle West both notched goals.

New West responded with a goal of their own, but it was too late and the Timberwolves advanced to the final.

"Royal City won the U15 title last year so this game was a pretty contested battle and emotions were tense," said Stewart.

In the final, Kelowna struck first, but West's goal tied things up by the end of the first half. The Okanagan squad then scored the winner in the second half and the Twolves couldn't respond.

Goalkeeper Garrett Shervey backstopped Prince George in all four games, despite taking a ball to the ribs in the second game against Kootenay. He bounced back to play in the remaining two matches.

"Defensively we played really well and the key was our midfield who was our heart the entire time," said Stewart.

Team members include: Seth Boulianne, Cayle Davidson, Jonathan Doyon, Will Erickson, Ryan Gaiesky, Justin Hunter, Malcolm Lambert, Jared Macpherson, Rhiley Mikovich, Corbin Normand, Garrett Shervey, Owen Stewart, Merek Cutler, Jeremy Monn and Kyle West.

Meanwhile, the U14 boys Timberwolves won a silver medal after being shut out 2-0 by Surrey in Sunday's final.

Prince George posted a 3-0 round-robin record, notching victories over Kootenay (4-1), KLM (2-1), and Juan de Fuca (2-1).
