The D.P. Todd Trojans took on one of the top senior boys basketball teams in B.C. and won convincingly.

The rest of their weekend wasn't quite as successful.

The Trojans were in Kamloops, playing in a tournament at Sa-Hali secondary school. In their second game, they faced the South Okanagan Hornets of Oliver, who started the event as the fifth-ranked double-A team in the province. D.P. Todd, ranked ninth in the double-A division, threw a smothering defence at the Hornets and was sharp offensively. In the end, the Trojans were rewarded with a 79-66 victory.

"We had a great game all around," said Trojans coach Norm Garfield. "That was probably one of our best games of the season."

D.P. Todd opened the tournament with a 58-41 loss to the 10th-ranked Westsyde Whundus of Kamloops. In that one, the Trojans played strong defensively but couldn't get much going on offence.

After the win against the Hornets, the Trojans met the Valleyview Vikes of Kamloops -- an honourable-mention team in the B.C. rankings -- and fell 71-69.

In the championship final, the Clarence Fulton Maroons of Vernon defeated Westsyde. The Maroons are currently eighth in B.C. in the double-A division.

At the end of the tournament, two members of the Trojans were singled out for awards. Haydn Molcak was chosen as a first-team all-star and Tanner Stephenson got the nod as the top defensive player.

The D.P. Todd boys will be in Vanderhoof tonight to play the Nechako Valley Vikings. On Wednesday (6:15 p.m.) they will host the Duchess Park Condors in a city league semifinal game. In the other semi, the PGSS Polars will take on the Kelly Road Roadrunners.

Starting Friday, Kelly Road will host an eight-team tournament. The final is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. on Saturday.
