The D.P. Todd Trojans and PGSS Polars are becoming quite familiar with each other.
The two senior boys' basketball squads battled on the hardwood for the second-consecutive weekend in the final of a Prince George tournament Saturday.
This time, the battle was staged on the Polars' home court and the Trojans prevailed yet again with a 83-53 victory.
Haydn Molcak and Joel Molcak led the way for the Trojans with 22 and 15 points respectively.
"It was a good win for us, our bench players got some playing time and it capped off a busy week for us," said D.P. Todd head coach Norm Garfield. "We've played PGSS three times this year and we've had some good games against them."
Inderpal Bassi replied for the Polars with 13 points.
The Polars were without their top player Tyrell Laing who was on the disabled list after suffering a bout of food poisoning on the weekend.
"Overall it was a good weekend. It was a chance for our team to build some chemistry without Tyrell," said Polars head coach Nav Parmar. "I'm very proud of the guys, they battled it out. They were building some comaraderie. It was a confidence booster and it was good for Tyrell to see them play without him."
The Trojans advanced to the final after a 87-48 win over North Peace secondary and an opening round 90-48 win over Quesnel's Correlieu secondary Friday.
"We had a really good game against North Peace and they're a very well-coached team," Garfield said. "Saturday's final was our fifth game of the week so the team was pretty tired. They were extremely focused and I had some pretty tired boys after the final. We had some major contribution from our bench guys which showed our depth on our team."
The Polars advanced to the final with a 69-59 win over Nechako Valley secondary from Vanderhoof. Even though he was ill, Laing led the team with 37 points.
PGSS opened the tourney Friday with a 72-60 victory against Duchess Park. Bassi netted 27 points.
In city league play, the Polars locked up a home court date in next month's city league semifinals with a 19-point win against Kelly Road secondary on Jan. 15. Laing posted 33 points for PGSS.
Kelly Road and College Heights secondary will play Wednesday night and the winner of that game will advance to play PGSS in one of two city semifinals Feb. 5.
D.P. Todd is 4-0 in city league play and will host the other semifinal Feb. 5.
