Trojans take Valleyview title

The D.P. Todd Trojans were the class of the field at a weekend senior girls basketball tournament in Kamloops.

Playing at Valleyview secondary, the Trojans won all three of their games, including a 55-31 victory against the Norkam Saints in Saturday's final.

"The girls played absolutely fantastic all weekend," said Trojans coach Reid Roberts, who also noted that the level of competition wasn't as high as it has been in some tournaments this season. "You never know what's going to happen when you play weaker teams. You're not quite sure if your team is going to step up and play where they should be playing at, and, this weekend, they did."

The Trojans went into the event as the sixth-ranked club in the provincial double-A division.

In the final, D.P. Todd held Norkam to just 12 points in the first half.

"That was phenomenal," Roberts said. "The girls' defence was just tough all weekend. I had lots of comments from parents and the organizers, saying, 'Man, you guys are intense.' It wasn't because Norkam was a weak team in the final, our defence was excellent and [the Saints] were getting really frustrated."

Offensively, Grade 10 forward Tenley Pearce led the Trojans with 12 points. Piper Hoekstra, a Grade 12 forward, hit for 10.

The Trojans started the tournament with a 61-46 win against Summerland. In that game, Sunita Bansal had a team-high 17 points and Hoekstra was on target for 14. In the semifinal round, D.P. Todd faced the Correlieu Clan of Quesnel and rolled to an 80-43 victory. Jamie Macfarlane and Hoekstra both finished with 14 points and Danielle Steel had 12.

Hoekstra was chosen as the tournament's most valuable player and Steel, a Grade 12 point guard, made the all-star team.

Other members of the Trojans are Ashley Knudsen, Anda Sturmanis, Lianne Haws, Olivia Fotsch, Brittany Sutton, Fiona Raymond, Dorion Van Caeseele and Ester Magnusdottir.

The Trojans and other local senior girls teams will compete at a PGSS tournament this coming weekend.
