Trojans begin provincial quest today

The D.P. Todd Trojans have already proven themselves as City League senior boys basketball champions.

Now it's time to see if they have what it takes to win the North Central zone double-A zone.

The Trojans are favoured in the four-team tournament, which starts today at 5 p.m. at D.P. Todd gym with the Nechako Valley Vikings taking on the Kelly Road Roadrunners. That game will be followed at 6:45 p.m. by the D.P. Todd-Fort Nelson game.

The respective winners meet in a semifinal Friday at noon, with the winner advancing to the A-final of the double-knockout tournament. Whichever team makes it that far would then have to lose twice to be eliminated. The winner will represent the zone at the double-A provincial tournament, March 5-0 in Langley.

The Trojans and Vikings have played each other three times this season and D.P. Todd has won all three games.

"The first two games we beat them by 18 and 19 and last weekend at Kelly Road in the final we only beat them by nine," said Trojans head coach Norm Garfield. "Fort Nelson is supposed to be an alright team too and will see them [Wednesday] when they play Duchess Park."

In other zone play, the City League-champion Duchess Park Condors host the double-A tournament beginning today, while the Cedars Christian Eagles, City League finalists, will be in Bella Coola for the single-A tournament.

The four-team triple-A girls zone tournament also starts today at PGSS, while the quad-A PGSS boys will be in Quesnel in a two-team double-knockout tournament against Correlieu starting Friday.
